Blue skies, bright daffodils, a garden full of shiny red tomatoes, an always-open blue screen door, a bread box full of treats, and cozy lamplit living rooms.. Mommom & Poppop’s home is one of my favorite homescenes from my childhood.
Mommom and Poppop picked me and my brother up from school every Friday and their home has become such a place of comfort. We sat in their living room chairs with our bellies full of happy meals and twizzlers. Their cabinets and garage were stocked with toys, games, drawing pads, and looney tunes tapes, and their backyard had plenty of room for exploring.
I didn’t know it at the time, but he was showing me how special he was when he took me for walks to the lake from the garden, let me help drive his truck (manual transmission!), and when we sat together cracking and snacking on assorted nuts for hours! He was always around, smiling, laughing, offering a voice of reason, and answering our curious questions with what seemed like infinite knowledge. He was as sharp as his trusty penknife, probably due in part to reading the newspaper and finishing crossword puzzles every day! As a Mom of toddlers, I am impressed at how he never seemed annoyed or even flustered by me, my siblings, or my kids. He just chuckled to himself, saying things like “Oh, they’ll eat when they’re hungry!”
Mommom was the queen of their homespun castle, but it wouldn’t have been what it was without Poppop’s warm presence and handiwork. His expertise in all things cooking and gardening was a fundamental part of their household magic. I continue to be inspired by the way they cooked and baked from scratch, often using vegetables from their own garden. My favorite recipes of theirs are clams casino, lemon pie, apple pie, and of course, the most comforting pasta sauce. One of my favorite memories with Poppop was when he came over and showed us how to make it, using the most concise measurements and instruction: “A big handful of parsley, a small handful of oregano.. Simmer until you’re happy!” If I made a pie or dinner and he complimented it, it felt like a Paul Hollywood handshake.
Poppop’s love for Mommom is something that I will always remember. He picked her flowers, called her “dear”, and I often saw him sneak a kiss while we were playing in the next room! After she passed, he still lit up when he told stories of her, and his wedding ring was his most prized possession. When he came home from the hospital into hospice care, it was the first thing he asked for. “I’m dressed now” he said after he put it back on. (Then he asked for a little glass of wine to go with dinner!)
I’m so thankful to have grown up in homes like this one, and that my kids even had a chance to play in this wonderful place, too! I like to think of Mommom and Poppop reunited at last! We will remember and be inspired by Poppop forever.

Dad, you were the dearest Father in-law that I received on the day that I wed your son. And, I just want to thank you Dad, for the things that you have done. You have given me a gracious man with whom I share my life. You are his loving father, and I his lucky wife. You used to pat his little head, and now I hold his hand. You raised in love a little boy, then gave to me a man. May you Rest in Peace Dad. Brian and I love you very much and will always hold you in our hearts and prayers.
