I've known Jim since we were five years old at Elmer elementary school. It didn't take long before we started a lifelong friendship. It was more that a friendship, around eleven or twelve years old we actually took a needle and became blood brothers. We would laugh so hard every time we recalled that story.
Jim and I joined the Navy soon after graduating from Bridgeton High School. With the thought of getting medical training and getting into the Medical Field after we were discharged from the Navy. We went to boot camp at San Diego Naval Recruit Training Center in August 1965. In November we started training at San Diego Naval Hospital for out rating as Hospital Corpsman. Sometime during boot camp and Med school we found out about the FMF and serving with the Marines in Viet Nam, Something the Naval Recruiting Petty Officer failed to mention! Jim and I went back to the recruiting office in Bridgeton to have a little talk we this guy. Fortunately for us he was no longer stationed there or we would have ended up in the Brig. After Corps school we got separated, Jim went to a Naval Hospital in New York City, if I remember correctly, and I went to the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, CA.
In Aug/Sept I went to Field Medical Service School at Camp Del Mar, right next to Pendleton. That's when I found out the difference between the Navy and Marine Corps! They were training us as if we were in combat and treating all these traumatic injuries such as gun shot wounds, amputations from mines and mortar's and puncture wounds from booby traps, which I experienced first hand in Nam. We went on 8-10 mile forced marches, no stops or water breaks, we drank during the march. We were only given one canteen of water and were told to make it last there wouldn't be any resupply until we reached out goal. Once we were on an operation and a few of us were taken prisoner by Marines dressed up like Viet Cong. They interrogated us for a couple of hours, using some tricks to get you to talk. Military Code Of Conduct only allows POWs to give name, rank and service number and that's all we told them. Jim went to this same school but at Camp Lejeune.
And then it was off to Viet Nam. All I'm going to say is that if it wasn't for Jim I most likely would not have made it home in one piece or at all.
I loved Jim like a brother and will miss him so much!

Deepest sympathy to you Phyllis, and your family. I remember Jim from school, and I remember you from one of my best childhood friends, Annette. I lived behind your house. Annette and I used to play Monopoly in your cedar, summer house for hours. Prayers and thoughts are sent your way.
Sincerely,
