Obituary of Douglas Scott VanMeter
Douglas Scott VanMeter, 50, went peacefully Home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by loving friends and family on January 22, 2019. Doug fought a courageous three year battle with cancer. Throughout this “journey” as he referred to it, Doug shared his faith, optimism and zest for life with all who crossed his path. Much as a sculptor removes all that is not the finished product, as the cancer progressed and slowly took his physical strength and stamina, the essential Doug shone brighter, a loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. He continued to offer counsel, prayers and words of encouragement to those around him.
Born on December 28, 1968 to Myron and Nancy VanMeter. Doug is survived by his partner, best friend and wife Lisa, beloved son Stephen and his wife Angel, who Doug loved like a daughter and Doug’s “best buddy” grandson Flynn. Left to cherish their memories of Doug are his mother Nancy (Vineland), brother David and wife Brooke (Mannington), sister Debbie and husband William Turner (Elmer), mother and father in law, Joel Sr. and Lynette Taylor (Millville), brother and sister in law, Joel Jr. and Barbara (Millville). Numerous nieces, nephews and their spouses and children were loved and cherished by Doug in this life and left to keep his memory in their hearts. Doug was predeceased by his father Myron, and uncles Carmen DeGeorge and Joe DeGeorge.
Doug was a graduate of Cumberland Christian School (Class of 1987). On July 13, 1991, Doug and Lisa were married and began their life together. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Bob Jones University, Doug and Lisa returned to New Jersey to manage Rental City (Vineland) and to start VanMeter’s Tax Service. In 2001, Doug and Lisa purchased Rental City and continued to work long hours to service their customers and grow the business. Never one to sit still, Doug expanded the business by consulting and sales in the special event industry.
Doug was a member of Faith Bible Church and had a passion for missions and supporting ministries serving the youth of our area. Doug actively supported several local organizations, Cornerstone Pregnancy Center, South Jersey Youth Alliance and nearest to his heart, Spring of Life Camp Inc. The family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Springs of Life Camp Inc. 13138 W. Buckshutem Road, Millville, NJ 08332. www.springsoflifecampnj.org
A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Sunday, 1/27/19 at Faith Bible Church, 3139 East Chestnut Avenue, Vineland, NJ 08360. Friends and family will be received from 3 pm to 4 pm, prior to the memorial service. Immediately after the service, all attendees are invited to a supper celebrating Doug’s life in the Family Life Center adjoining the church. Internment will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, Upper Deerfield Township. Written condolences can be sent to the family at www.padgettfuneralhomes.com.
