Francis J. “Chick” Bateman, 86, of Fairfield Twp. died on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at his home under the care of Hospice. Born in Bridgeton to the late Linwood P. Bateman and Christina Margaret Grosscup Bateman, he was the husband of Verna LeMatty Bateman. Francis was a resident of Fairfield Twp. most of his life. Prior to his retirement, Francis had worked for Bayside State Prison for many years. After he retired, he had worked as a Rural Route Mail Carrier for the United States Post Office in Greenwich Twp. and Shiloh Borough for 25 years. “Chick” was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Japan. He was an active member of the VFW 1795 in Bridgeton and the American Legion Shoemaker Post 95 in Bridgeton. In his free time, he loved fishing and hunting. Besides his wife Verna, he is survived by; four children, Francis J. Bateman, Jr. and his wife, Pam of Fairfield Twp., Patricia A. Welden and her husband, Terry of Newport, Robin G. Bateman of Fairfield Twp. and Stephen Bateman and his wife, Leslie of Fairfield Twp.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, Upper Deerfield Twp.
