Obituary of Dorothy J. Spencer

Dorothy J. Spencer, 84, of Cedarville died on Monday, January 4, 2016 at her home under the care of Hospice. Born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Maurice Schaffer and Hettie Sheppard Schaffer, she was the wife of the late Calburn G. Spencer. Dorothy had been a resident of Cedarville for most of her life. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed by the former J.C. Penny store in Bridgeton and Myron L. Powell Elementary School in Cedarville. She had also served on the Lawrence Township Board of Elections for 21 years. She had been a member of Cedarville Baptist Church, the Bridgeton Chapter of AARP, the Bridgeton Second Fifties Club, the former C.B. Club where she served as secretary and the W.C.T.U. of Cedarville. In her free time, Dorothy enjoyed cooking, baking and doing crafts. Surviving are her son, Bruce William Spencer of Lake City, FL; a sister, Eleanor Schaffer Young of Greenville, NC; five grandchildren, Cathy Sasser and her husband, David of Key West, FL, Samuel Gifford of Lawrence Twp, Bernadette Blue and her husband, Michael of Cyprus, TX, Tabitha Gifford and her fiancé, Thomas Hughes of Cedarville and David Gifford and his wife, Allie of Egg Harbor Twp. and two great-grandchildren, Julian Hughes and Avery Sasser. Besides her husband, Calburn and her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Brenda Spencer Gifford; two sisters, Eva S. Rudderow and Martha J. Schaffer and her step-mother, Permelia J. Schaffer. Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 160 Main Street, Cedarville on Friday, January 8th at 11 AM. Interment will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Cedarville.
