Robert P. McCormick, 91, formerly of Bridgeton passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at his home in Ocean City. Born in White Plains, NY, on April 14, 1922 he was the son of the late Edward B. McCormick and Elizabeth "Dolly" McCormick and step-son of the late Catherine K. "Kay" McCormick. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of sixty-nine years, Janet (Stanton) McCormick, who passed away this past August. Mr. McCormick served his country as a Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps during World War Two, seeing tank action in the South Pacific at Engebi, Parry and Eniwetok Islands and the Marshall Islands. He was honorably discharged in September of 1945 with the designation of excellent character of service. Throughout the years he enjoyed maintaining contact and attending reunions with his war buddies and savored the flavor of Spam and hot chocolate which recalled memories of his years in service. He and his late wife Janet lived most of their adult lives on Cornell Avenue in Bridgeton where they raised their five sons. He was retired from New Jersey Bell Telephone/AT & T where he had worked for many years as a service technician throughout the Cumberland County area. Mr. McCormick gave much of his time to public service. He was a Boy Scout Committeeman for Troop 99, Bridgeton and Past Commander of American Legion Shoemaker Post 95, Bridgeton. He helped to build the Babe Ruth baseball field, later known as Alden Field and when Mr. Albert Schrank decided to open Cubby Hollow in Bridgeton to children for ice skating, Bob wired the lighting for night time activities joining other neighborhood fathers in readying the pond. He was Chairman of the Bridgeton Zoning Board of Adjustment, was elected to Bridgeton City Council and achieved designation as the City's first Registered Municipal Clerk. A dedicated supporter of the Bridgeton Free Public Library, he served for many years on the Board as well as City Council Liaison to the library. An active member of the Democratic Party, he was appointed by Governor Brendan T. Byrne to the State Advisory Board on Vocational Education where he served for a number of years. Bob enjoyed traveling across the country with Janet and their children, fishing the Delaware Bay and in the ocean off Ocean City where he annually vacationed with his family and permanently moved in 2012. Surviving are his sons, Robert J. (Jane) of Somers Point, Douglas L. of Upper Deerfield Twp., David B. of Bridgeton and Dan (Bernardita) of Lovettesville, VA. He was predeceased by his son, Steven M. (Judy) of Greenwich. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Justin (Deana) McCormick, Meghan (Peter) Hoerner, Kyle (Erin Lee) McCormick, Lucas (Caroline Melchiorre) McCormick, Lily (Noah Hindle) McCormick, Malachai McCormick, Lauren McCormick and Jenniedale McCormick (Matt Sharkey), his brothers in law, Don, John (Natalie d.), Raymond Stanton (Jana Fay), Steve Nikkel (Wilma-Billie d.) and two sisters in law, Marion (Albert d.) Kienzle and Jean (Robert d.) Russell.five great-grandchildren and a large number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, James (Marie d.) McCormick of Rockville Centre, NY and Edward I. (Jay d.), New York City. Private graveside funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton.
