Obituary of James C. Mayhew

James C. Mayhew, 99, of Newport died Monday, November 25, 2013 at his home under the care of Hospice. Born in Newport on April 27, 1914 to the late Belford S. Mayhew and Artie Riggins Mayhew, he was the husband of the late Eva Robbins Mayhew and was a lifetime resident of Newport. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Mayhew had been employed with Atlantic City Electric Co. for over 40 years. He had worked as a commercial representative for several years and also had worked as manager of the former Bridgeton office. He was a former member of the Bridgeton Kiwanis Club and an avid gardener. In years past, he had been an active member of the Newport Methodist Church where he had been a Sunday school superintendent and also served on several church committees. He had also played baseball as a catcher in the former Bayshore Oyster League years ago. Surviving are a daughter, Jane Mayhew-Rowland and her husband Jack of Pitman; a sister Doris Kennedy of Deerfield Twp.; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. Besides his wife, James was preceded in death by three children, James R. Mayhew, Joyce Mayhew-Tomenski and Joseph Belford Mayhew and a brother, Major John Mayhew. Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 160 Main Street, Cedarville on Saturday, November 30th at 11 AM. Interment will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Cedarville.
