Gonzalles Baker, Sr., age 93, of Newport died Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Cumberland Manor in Hopewell Twp. The son of the late David B. Baker and Viola Phoenix Baker he was born in Barnwell, South Carolina on October 5, 1919. He was the husband of the late Mary Corley Baker and had been a Newport resident since 1941. He had lived in Cedarville prior to that. Mr. Baker retired in 1984 from the Jessie Morie Sand Company after 27 years of service. He had previously worked at the Robbins Farm in Newport for 16 years. In the 1930's he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps. Surviving are six sons, Lewis Baker of Denver, CO, Willard J. Baker of Fairfield Twp., Glenn L. Baker of Magnolia, Garry W. Baker of Fairfield Twp., Thomas Baker of Millville and David B. Baker of Rosenhayn; two daughters, Loretta Rolle of Deerfield Twp. and Alice E. Baker of Fairfield Twp. along with 36 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Gonzalles Baker, Jr., a brother, Emmett Baker and a sister, Jalania Vaughn. Funeral services will be held at Union Baptist Temple, South Pine Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, Bridgeton, on Friday, October 4th at 11 AM. Friends will be received at the church from 9 to 11 AM prior to the services. Interment will take place at Gouldtown Memorial Park in Fairfield Twp.
