Harriet Lorraine (Elmer) Flowers, 91, of Keystone Heights, FL died on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Shand's Hospital in Starke, FL. Born in Bridgeton to the late James H Elmer, Sr. and Enola Sprenkle Elmer; she was the wife of the late Kenneth Hess. Flowers. She and Kenneth married on July 4, 1943 before his deployment to Europe during World War Two. He was killed at the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. Harriet was a graduate of the Bridgeton High School class of 1939. She had worked for the Farmers and Merchants National Bank, Dr. Kracke, MD, Dr. Kotler, DDS and Owens Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton. She moved to Gainesville, FL in 1956 with Jane E. Driscoll. There she worked for the First National Bank of Gainesville, FL, the City of Gainesville in the purchasing department and as Camp Secretary for the Alachua County School Board's "Camp Crystal Lake" in Starke, FL. She ended her working career as Secretary to the Head Start Program in Gainesville. She was a member at large of the Beta Sigma Phi and an honorary member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, International, Beta Epsilon Chapter in Florida. Harriet enjoyed sports of all kinds and was a great fan of the University of Florida Gators. She was also a regular attendee of the Bausch and Lomb Women's Tennis Championship on Amelia Island, FL for its entire 29 years. She was a member of the Faith Presbyterian Church of Melrose, FL where she served as treasurer. Harriet also volunteered her time for many years to the Lake Aren Ministries which provides assistance to families in need. Lovingly known as "Hap" or "Happy", she is survived by her housemate and companion of many years, Jane E. Driscoll of Keystone Heights, FL; her brother, Wilbur S. Elmer of Bridgeton; two nieces, Patricia A. Gannon of Bridgeton and Susan H. Porter and her husband Bruce of Stow Creek Twp.; a nephew, James G. Elmer and his wife Katryna of Orlando, FL; two great-nieces, Laura Graham of Bridgeton and Kelsey A. Elmer of Orlando, FL and two great-nephews, James D. Elmer of Orlando, FL and Robert Porter of Stow Creek Twp. She was preceded in death by a brother, James H. Elmer, Jr. Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Twp., on Wednesday, June 5th at 11 AM. Interment will take place at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the services. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Faith Presbyterian Church, 2738 S.E. State Road 21, Melrose, FL 32666.
