I worked with Bill at the Fairfield Middle School. He was a vibrant presence at the school amongst both the students and the faculty. He was a tough teacher, and more importantly, fair. His teaching style caused the students to have to think, a very important life skill. In my time there I only saw Bill upset one time. He was out in the hallway toward the end of the year and it was evident he was upset. When I asked him what was wrong, he said his grade book was missing. Back then we didn't have the computer to keep our grades on, so it was a huge loss. Unfortunately, I do not recall whether or not he ever found it. However, I know if he hadn't, he had an excellent handle on how each student had been performing. He esteemed the importance of being a teacher and took the job seriously. One last thing... he had a terrific sense humor and could really make you laugh.

Mr. Morvay was a legend in 8th grade science. He was so funny, cared so much about students, and awakened an interest in science for all students. He connected so well with 8th graders with his nicknames for students and keeping us in suspense about what will be the next comment to make us gasp! He also gave so much time to us by running after school science enrichment class - creating batteries and running car races, conducting chemistry experiments that would change colors and erupt, and the infamous stink bombs. We all adored him and he prepared us very well for high school. Thank you for your service to students and our country. You leave fond memories with us!

Q: What will you never forget about William?
A: In my early years at Fairfield, Morvay ( as we called him) was an established teacher there. At first I thought him to be gruff, but knew he had a dry sense of humor. As a newer teacher, I wore dresses and heels, and would often slip them off in the smoke filled teachers room(That he contributed to greatly) at lunch and prep periods. One day they disappeared when I went to the bathroom or to answer the door. I had to teach the rest of the day without shoes. He and another male teacher had Stood up on the couch and put them in the ceiling tiles. They did retrieve them later and at the end of the day they were waiting in the teacher’s room. I then learned what a prankster he really was. After that, I always kept spare shoes in my classroom. He also drank coffee constantly and was upset when one of us would take his mug home and wash it in the dishwasher occasionally. He swore his coffee did not taste, right. A final memory of him is that he would try to teach children to think, although sometimes in unusual ways. He once sent a former student of mine to my classroom telling me that Mr. Morvay wanted a bucket of steam for an experiment. I, of course, caught on and sent the student back saying I didn’t have it and that Someone else must have borrowed it. The poor kid went around to several teachers asking. Mr. Gaffney, who was assistant principal at the time, added that he needed the left-handed shovel back as well from whoever had the bucket of steam. The student came back about a 1/2 hour later after he had been to several teachers asking, and I finally told him to think of what he was asking for. I have many other fond memories of working with “Mr.Morvay”.

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of William?
A: I first met Mr Morvay in my 4th year at elementary school..of course we had all heard of him and that he was a hard teacher.. It's been many years since then.. and to see this breaks my heart..I've searched his name for years..as a child we never know the adults names.. but this man taught me to value myself.. never give up..and gave me encouragement when I needed it..when he was proud of me..the smile inside of my soul was contagious..I truly wish I could have thanked him one last time..as a student of his..MR MORVAY YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE

I was one of Mr. Morvay’s students and my mother was one of his co-workers for many years. I stayed in touch with him after grade school, high school and college. I always remember, no matter where we were in public, if he saw me he would make sure I saw him and we would chat. He was a great teacher and really cared about his students. He will be missed.
