William O. Nichols, age 89, of Upper Deerfield Township, died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday morning, March 10, 2013. The husband of Margaret Haaf Nichols, he was born on July 27, 1923, in Elmer to the late David G. Nichols and Viola Pitman Nichols. He was a lifetime Upper Deerfield Township resident. Mr. Nichols retired in 1999 from the Johnson Sod Farm in Upper Deerfield where he had worked for 11 years. Prior to that he had been employed with Ackley's, Inc. in Upper Deerfield for 21 years and the former Bond Bread Company in Bridgeton for 20 years. He was a member of Friendship Finley United Methodist Church and had been a former member of the Deerfield United Methodist Church for many years. Mr. Nichols had been active with the National and Local Grange Associations, Upper Deerfield Fire Department # 1 and the Cumberland County Fireman's Association. In addition to his wife Margaret, he is survived by two daughters, Linda N. Gehring of Hopewell Township and Robin L. Taylor of Alloway Township; a son, Ronald E. Nichols of Florida; a brother, David G. Nichols, Jr. of Elmer; a sister, Mildred Zane of Pittsgrove; 11 grandchildren, Eric, Aaron, Jamie, Amber, Lori, Meghan, Mallory, McKenzi, Ean, Dana and Dayle; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sisters, Dorothy Olsen, Emma Setzer and Doloris Williams. Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway #77, Upper Deerfield Township on Friday, March 15th at 11 a.m. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the services. Burial will take place at Deerfield Methodist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the family.
