Obituary of Leon Werkheiser

Leon "Shakey" Werkheiser, 76 of Pennsville, passed away on May 19, 2022 at Salem Medical Center after a brief illness.
Leon was born in Bridgeton and grew up in Shiloh, NJ. He graduated from Bridgeton High School Class of 1963. Leon served in the US Navy and trained as a radioman.
Prior to his retirement Leon worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, as a heavy equipment operator, a line of work he did for many years and was one of the best. In his past he also worked as an auto body man, bartender and crabber and trapper. Leon was an avid boater for many years and loved spending time on or near the water. He enjoyed collecting antiques and was an avid reader.
With his natural abilities, Leon was incredibly talented. He enjoyed photography, watercolor painting, woodcarving and singing and playing bluegrass and classic country music. He loved spending time with his many friends and family.
Leon is survived by his wife Tammy Werkheiser, sons Leon Werkheiser (Cathy), Dale Werkheiser (Loretta) and daughters Robin Simpkins and Debbie Burden (Bob), a sister Gladys Walford, nephews Michael and Fred Walford along with several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and his beloved dog, Rhonda. Leon was predeceased by daughter Penny Simpkins and son Norman Graves.
Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Twp. on Saturday, June 4rd at 3 PM. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 2 PM to 3 PM prior to the services. If preferred, in lieu of flowers, please donate to The Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music, P.O.
