Obituary of Bernetta Mae Saunders

Bernetta Mae Saunders, 69, of Bridgeton passed away at Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg, VA on Friday, October 29, 2021. Born in Bridgeton to the late Howard Hill, Sr. and Frances Hilton Hill, she had been residing in Petersburg, VA for the past six months and prior to that she had been a resident of Bridgeton most of her life. She had also briefly resided in Clementon. Before her retirement, Bernetta had been employed at Bally's Casino Hotel in Atlantic City as a Utility Porter for over 33 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Deerfield Twp. and New Hope Pentecostal Church in Cape May Court House. She was known for singing in the choir and ushering and had also served as choir president at First Baptist Church in Deerfield. In her free time, Bernetta enjoyed knitting, watching TV especially Game of Thrones, playing games on her phone, shopping and most of all spending time with her family, Her family described her as an upbeat person who laughed and joked often. Everyone will miss her infectious smile. She is survived by; three children, Sonya Wright (Warren) of Bridgeton, Mervin Richard Saunders (Carol Cintron) of Vineland and Pauline V. Saunders of Petersburg, VA; four siblings, retired Master Sgt. Eugene Hilton (Everlyn) of GA, Howard Hill, Jr. of Millville, Julia Thomas (Jahde) of Deerfield Twp. and Cordelia Hill of Millville; a special nephew, Herb Shaw of Bridgeton; her special best friend, Susan Thompson of Gouldtown; her honorary daughter in law, Angelique Hilton of Sicklerville; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. She was preceded in death by; her brother, Charles J. Hill and her honorary son, Anthony Hilton. Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Twp. on Friday, November 12th at 11 AM. Interment will take place at Fordville Memorial Park in Fairfield Twp. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 9 AM to 11 AM prior to the services.
