Irene Emily Elwell, (nee Doughty) age 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 20. She had resided in Fairfield Township for the last 65 years then at Bishop McCarthy Center for the past seven weeks while under the care of Compassionate Care Hospice for the last 6 months. Born in Millville to the late Raymond and Mabelle (Atkinson) Doughty, she was the wife of the late Newton W. Elwell (1999). They were married on January 13, 1950, and she was a military bride for 20 years and an IBEW wife another 20 years, then became a “snowbird” going to Florida in the winter. She had more recently resided with her son Michael and daughter in law Karen for 5 1/2 years in Fairton. Irene was a 1948 graduate of Memorial High School of Millville, she also attended beauty school, taking the train to Camden each day. She worked for salons in Millville and Bridgeton until opening her own shop at her home in Fairton. During the election seasons she worked on the polling committee at the municipal building for several years. She was a member of the Fairton Methodist Church where she attended with her children and more recently a member at Faith Bible Church in Vineland where she attended regularly. Her favorite activities were to spend time with her family and friends. She enjoyed nature and animals always having cats and dogs around her. She also loved to cross stich and taught Swedish Weave at the Edgar Joyce Senior Center in Seabrook for 15 years, where she helped several ladies make beautiful blankets, table runners and placemats. Irene is survived by her 6 children: Michael (Karen) of Fairton, R. Scott (Ruth) of New York, Susan Stover (Andy) of Vineland, Bruce (Jackie) of Millville, Scherrie Lamboy (Raymond) of PA, and Douglas of Florida. She loved being Nana to her 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren with the 20th due in November. Irene is also survived by her sister, Carole Van Gilder, living in Ohio, and an aunt and uncle residing in PA as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a brother, Raymond Doughty of Fairton. Services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 28, at Faith Bible Church, 3139 E. Chestnut Ave. Vineland, N.J. 08361 with the viewing from 10 – 11, the service at 11, internment at Greenwood Memorial Park in Millville following the service and a luncheon for family and friends in the Family Life Center located at Faith Bible Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Bible Church, or to Compassionate Care Hospice, 956 Asbury Ave., Second Floor, Ocean City, N.J. 08226.
