Obituary of Norman D. Cobb

Norman Daniel Cobb passed away on Monday, September 6, 2021, after an extended illness. He was 86. Norman was born on February 28, 1935, on Cobb Street in Port Norris, NJ. Norman met his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Ann (nee Murray), on April 1, 1955, on a blind date, and they married October 30 that same year. They have three daughters, Rachel M. Cobb, Dr. Dawn M. Cobb-Fossnes and Lisa M. Kincaid; two sons-in-law, Tor Fossnes and Kenneth Kincaid; two granddaughters, Alyssa Martinez (Jose) and Amber Worley; and three great-grandchildren, Makayla, Daniel and Jay, as well as many nieces and nephews. In his youth, Norman started working to help support his family. He delivered newspapers in Port Norris and also worked for a time at the Dorchester shipyard. He also worked at his sister’s family summer camp, Indian Branch Park, in Hammonton, NJ. He also enjoyed being active in the local Boy Scouts program. In fact, he was very proud of his uniform and donated it to the Port Norris Historical Society. Norman graduated from Millville High School in 1953. After graduation, he went to school at the Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia to become a draftsman. He worked for the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company for 14 years as a draftsman. But he hated working inside and when the opportunity came, he worked outside as a lineman for 20 years. After early retirement from NJ Bell, he then continued to worked at various construction-type jobs, including for Ed Horseman of Millville, NJ, building and remodeling houses until he really retired. Even then, he helped on his daughter’s farm, Weedy Acres, and, of course, tackled many home projects. Norman was always finding something to keep him busy. Norman was enthusiastic about life. He enjoyed being outside and taking bus trips with his wife and long weekends to Lancaster County. He loved the Bird-in-Hand restaurant. At Christmas time, he went all out decorating, especially the front yard. Each year, he would climb and place a star atop an 80-foot evergreen at the house, which the couple planted many years ago and was one of their first Christmas trees. In the 1970s and 1980s, Norman and Dorothy ran the youth group at the Bridgeton Assembly of God on Indian Ave. in Bridgeton, NJ. Norman was honored as the father of the year a couple of times. He was also a deacon for many years and was still a member of the church at the time of his passing. Norman was always willing to help and loved chatting with everyone. His parents, Edgar Henry Baxter Cobb and Beulah Mae (nee Keller) Cobb; his brothers, Henry, Frank and Ty Cobb; and his sisters, Anna Mae Morgan and Ruth Gifford, are all predeceased. The visitation before the funeral service will be from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2021. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. The family will be there to welcome friends and relatives. Please wear a mask. Covid policies will be followed. Interment will take place at Porchtown Methodist Cemetery, 220 Porchtown Road, Newfield at 1:30 PM.
