Darla and family,
I am so sorry to read of Bill’s passing. I have fond memories of his kindness and warm heart during my time working with you at Southwoods. He was always so welcoming and hospitable. Who would know that years later, my brother would be diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and be blessed by the clinical trial that Bill did! My brother and my family are directly blessed because of his selflessness and contribution to medical advances. I know that there are hundreds of others too ... but we have a direct connection that was already established and for that I will be eternally humbled and grateful. Your love and life reads like a storybook Darla. Enjoy each chapter that is filled with so many memories and pictures of your life together. It will be those pages of love and commitment to your vows and life shared that will dry your tears and cause you laughter in the midst of your pain. Again, please accept my sincerest condolences and thanks for his life and your loss. Heaven has a special set of wings for people like Bill ... who choose to be a blessing to others in the midst of their own trials ...

It is with a heavy heart that we received the very sad news of Bill’s passing. He was the first patient to enroll and to be treated on our first clinical trial of a new type of therapy, Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T cells, which use the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. Bill was a true pioneer and a humble hero. One of his requests at his cell infusion in 2010 was to ask for our staff who developed the therapy to come take a picture with him, so he could have the picture signed. This memento he presented to New York Times reporter Denise Grady when she interviewed him in September, 2011 for this story https://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/13/health/13gene.html
Bill leaves many legacies. His contributions to science live on in many publications, and in the many CAR T patients who followed him enrolling on clinical trials, and those of our academic and industry collaborators. He had some sense of the impact he had on cancer immunotherapy, but remained modest about the part he played, though we all came to appreciate the significance as the FDA approved this new therapy to treat two types of cancer. Now, thousands of patients around the world have received this treatment.
