Alfred “Butch” Girtain, Jr., 76, of Salem, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2020 at his home under the care of hospice and his family. Born in Canton, NJ to the late Alfred Girtain, Sr. and Mildred Noble Girtain, he was the husband of Arlene Caldwell Girtain. He retired as head mechanic from Kingsway Regional High School after 25 years. Prior to that he had been employed with Earl Erdner-Busy Corner in Woodstown and Cross Transportation in Bridgeton. Family, cars, motorcycles and mechanic work were the joys of Alfred’s life. He worked on all kinds of machinery, from lawnmowers to antiques and race cars. It was his true passion. His favorite place to be in the world was “The Old Buzzard Club”, also known as his garage. He is survived by; his wife of 47 years, Arlene Caldwell Girtain; two sons, Donte (Desiree) Girtain of Quinton and Jeremy (Jean) Girtain of West Deptford; two daughters, Rhonda (Joe) Lopez of Vineland and Dawn Hasher of Quinton; a sister, Sandra (Walt) Drezgal of Quinton; two sister-in-laws, Stella Davis of Woodstown and Hazel Davis of Lower Alloways Creek; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of extended family. He was preceded in death by; his parents; two brothers, Charles Davis, Albie Davis and a sister, Darlene Walker. The family would like to give special thanks to; Cindy, Vance and Lillian of Bayada hospice; Lower Alloways Creek Police Department, Rescue Squad and the Quinton Rescue Squad for the excellent care they gave to Alfred. Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Twp. on Friday, February 21st at 11 AM. Interment will take place at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Twp. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 9 AM to 11 AM prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alfred’s memory to Quinton Baptist Church, P.O. BOX 6 Quinton, NJ 08072.
