Obituary of Bernard Nelson Hicks

Bernard Nelson Hicks Sr. AKA “Slim” , age 72, departed this life on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at home. He was born on April 12, 1947 to the late Theodore and Louise (Wiggins) Hicks in Norfolk, Virginia.

 

In 2018, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

 

He attended elementary and Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia.

 

In the 1960’s his family relocated to Bridgeton, New Jersey where he met and married Essie L. (Wright) Hicks. To this union 3 children were born, Reneé M. Wright, Bernard N. Hicks Jr. and Bernadette D. Hicks.

 

He worked for Murbecks Knitted Fabrics Co. Inc for 5 years. In 1974, he left there to work at Leone Industries until his retirement in 2012. In his past-time, he enjoyed watching sports, fishing, hunting, and eating. Some of his favorite foods were baked chicken, cabbage, okra and tomatoes and candied yams. “Yo dog!” and “Never that!” were among his favorite sayings. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He always ended a conversation with, “I Love You”. Everyone who knew him, knew he had a heart of gold. He would do anything for anyone.

 

He leaves to cherish his memory; his wife, Essie L. Hicks of Harrison, GA.; his children, Lisa Hicks of Norfolk, VA., Reneé M. Wright of Millville, NJ, Bernard N. Hicks Jr of Harrison, GA.,and Bernadette D. Hicks of Bridgeton, NJ.; his grandchildren, Mercedes J. Wright and Kwamé D. Wright of Millville, NJ.; a great-grandson, Kaison R. Wright of Millville, NJ.; his brothers, Theodore L. (Helen) Hicks of Norfolk, VA. and Anthony Hicks of Milford, DE.; a sister, Marion Lawrence of Norfolk, VA.; his sisters-in-law, Lisa Hicks of Bridgeton, NJ, Willie Bell (Emanuel) Dixon of St. Petersburg, FL., Carrie Glenn of Ft. Lauderdale, FL., Ida Brihm and Sarah Brihm of Bridgeton, NJ.; a special cousin, Denise Williams; his dear friends, Johnny and Regina Pitts, Patricia Wilson and Maryann Dooley and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

 

He was predeceased by; his parents, Theodore and Louise Hicks; his father and mother-in-law, JC and Marion Wright; his brothers, Solomon Hicks and Herman Hicks; his sisters, Elouise Moses and Gloria Jean Hicks; his sister-in-law, Quincy Brihm; his brothers-in-law, Jessie Brihm, Robert Brihm and James Lawrence and his grandson, Keith R. Wright.

 

Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Two. on Thursday, July 25th at 11 AM. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the services. Written condolences can be sent to the family through the funeral home website at www.padgettfuneralhomes.com.
