Obituary of Hattie Baker

Please share a memory of Hattie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Hattie Baker, also known affectionately, as “Mom Bake” was born in South Carolina. She later relocated to New Jersey with her mother and siblings. She was educated in the Cumberland County school system, obtaining her general education diploma in her adult years.

She was employed at various jobs including Vineland State School and Millville Hospital. She retired from the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland where she worked as a professional cook. Some years after retirement, she relocated to Florida to be closer to her son and young grandson, Ted and TJ. Following living in Florida, she moved to Atlanta where she then resided closer to some of her daughters and grandchildren.

Cooking became her passion. Many, many people enjoyed her meals. Holiday cooking was a major production but she never tired. If you gave her flour and water, she could make a meal. If you added sugar, you were in for a ‘real’ treat. Sweet potato pies and yeast rolls became her specialty. Please do not forget the fried chicken and fried crabs.

Mom was a caring and loving mother. She found time to assist and extend herself whenever needed. She was a homeroom mother, helping with treats and school functions. She worked within the Foster Grandparent Program. She was a community aide, driving voters to the election polls – all while maintaining her household, rearing her children and nurturing various family members. She was a true example of Proverbs 31. Showing love, kindness, compassion, selflessness, a hug, a smile and yes, a ‘strong’ reprimand ‘with assistance’ if she felt it was needed.

In her senior years, Hattie became an avid basketball fan; rooting for LeBron James and her teams, the Golden State Warriors and the Atlanta Braves. Her favorite TV show was the Price is Right. Come on Down!!

Hattie accepted the Lord as her personal Savior as a young adult. She especially enjoyed attending church with her mother and daughter, Linda. Some of her famous quotes were “To God be the Glory”, “We’ll understand it better by and by”. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 121:1KJV ; “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.”

She is survived by; her adopted sister, Catherine Kollock; her daughters, Whilimenia Troxler, Pauline Baker-Ford, Myyon Baker, Gwendolyn Willis (Howard), Terri Lynn Baker and Donna Baker (Nick); 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by; her mother; her siblings, Eula Mae Selby, Mabel Broadley, Vernell Jones and Marion “Butch” Jamison; her former husband, Emmett Baker, Sr.; her daughters, Linda Baker-Grant and Lavina Baker and her sons, Emmett “Bake” Baker, Jr. and Theodore “Ted” Baker, Sr.
