Obituary of Robert I. Benton

Robert I. Benton, 93 of Hopewell Twp. passed away on Tuesday Dec. 4, 2018 at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland, NJ.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Irving and Olive Benton and was a lifelong resident of the Bridgeton area. Robert graduated Vineland High School at the age of 15 and had to wait 2 years to join the Navy during WWII. He was stationed aboard the USS Cabot before being accepted into the Naval Officer Program and Attended Cornell University. Upon discharge he returned to Bridgeton, married Barbara and began a career with NJ Bell Telephone Co. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Bob and Barbara both enjoyed golf, pinochle and their winter home in Fort Myers Florida.

Robert was predeceased by his wife of 71 years Barbara. He leaves behind two children Bruce Benton and his wife Brenda and Arline Gray and her husband David; six grandchildren, Jennifer Benton, Andrea Levick and her husband Chris, Lisa Schuck and her husband Steve; four step-grandchildren, Richard Leyman and his wife Jami, Kenneth Leyman, Christopher Gooden and Kim Cacciamani and 12 great-grandchildren

Cremation took place at Laurel Lawn Crematory. Entombment will be made at Overlook Mausoleum In Bridgeton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s memory can be made to Ranch Hope For Boys at Ranch Hope, Inc. PO Box 325 – Alloway, NJ 08001.
