Obituary of John W. O'Brien, Jr.

John W. O'Brien, 85, of Pittsgrove Twp. and formerly of Philadelphia, PA died on Friday, November 3, 2017at Inspira Medical Center-Elmer following a brief illness.

Born in Philadelphia, PA to the late John W. O'Brien, Sr. and Mary Durning O'Brien, he was the husband of the late Rita Casper O'Brien. Since 2006, John had lived in Pittsgrove Twp. with his son Patrick but had been a resident of Philadelphia, PA for most of his life.

Prior to his retirement, he had been an iron worker for Union Local #401, Philadelphia, PA for over 50 years. John was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict as a Paratrooper. He was a member of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Cheltenham, PA. In his free time, John loved to play golf and visit the casino where he enjoyed playing craps.

He is survived by; his son, Patrick O'Brien and his wife, Mary Lou of Pittsgrove Twp., five grandchildren, Melissa Black and her husband, Vincent of North East Philadelphia, Shannon O'Brien of North East Philadelphia, Kaitlyn O'Brien of Vineland, Bridget O'Brien and her fiance, Sam of Pittsgrove Twp. and Brenna O'Brien of Pittsgrove Twp.; 12 great-grandchildren, John “Jack”, Mary, David, Bernie, Sophia, Patrick, Vincent, Jr., Viviana, Geneveve, Jimmy, Charlie and Sammy, IV and a brother, Frank “Bupp” O'Brien. Besides his wife of over 40 years, Rita, he was preceded in death by; his son, John “Jack” O'Brien, III and a brother, Patrick O'Brien.

Graveside services and inurnment will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 1056 Seashore Rd., Cape May, NJ 08204 on Saturday, November 11th at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's memory to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation, PO Box 781352, Philadelphia, PA 19178-1352.
