Merle S. Rain, age 84, of Mechanicsville, VA and formerly of Cedarville died Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville. The husband of Monell White Rain, he was born in Bridgeton on June 4, 1927 to the late Harry S. Rain and Helen Sheppard Rain. He had lived in Virginia for the past two years and prior to that was a lifetime Cedarville resident. Mr. Rain had served his country in the United States Navy during World War Two on the USS Missouri. Prior to his retirement he had taught cabinetry at the Atlantic County Vocational Technical Center. He was well known as a woodworker and custom cabinet maker and had participated in restorations of historical residences in the area. An avid hunter, traveler, fisherman and camper he was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the Cumberland Rifle Range and Cedarville Fire Company. Mr. Rain had been a member of Evening Star Lodge, F &AM in Cedarville for over 50 years. In addition to his wife, Monell, he is survived by three daughters, Martha Cunningham (Raymond) of PA, Merle Lynn Zislin (Scott) of FL and Jennifer Whitlock (David) of VA; two sons, Robert W. Rain, Sr. of Hopewell Township and David Neal Rain (Rene Ferrari-Rain) of Cedarville; 11 grandchildren, Stephanie, Raymond, Michael, Jennifer, Christopher, Kaitlynn, Matthew, Kimberly, Robert W., Jr., Robert Patrick and Spencer and 6 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 160 Main Street, Cedarville on Saturday, April 28th at 11 AM. Burial will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Cedarville.
