Obituary of Charles H. Steinhauer Jr.

Charles H. Steinhauer, Jr., longtime resident of Newport, New Jersey, passed away unexpectedly on April 24th, 2022 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was 79. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, Charles was the ever-steady rock of his family and will be dearly missed. Charles was born to Charles & Mary (Peschko) Steinhauer in Camden, New Jersey on December 22, 1942 and grew up in Hi-Nella, New Jersey graduating from Collingswood High School in 1960. He married his high school sweetheart Phyllis A. Spaeth on June 15, 1963, and together they had four daughters: Michele Steinhauer (Tina), Mary Steinhauer-Kula (Antal), Melinda Telli (Atilla) and Melissa Telli. He moved his family to Newport in the summer of 1979 with a desire to be closer to nature and the Delaware Bay. Charlie loved his four grandchildren dearly and was a proud “Pop-Pop” to Megan Kula and Oliver, Sebastian, and Atticus Telli. Charlie worked as a millwright, plumber and planner / scheduler at E.I. DuPont in Deepwater, New Jersey for 29 years and also worked his farm and crabbing boat before retiring at age 50. Charlie loved the outdoors. In addition to taking many camping trips, he loved trapping, fishing, and hunting (deer, turkey and most of all duck). Charlie enjoyed many fishing trips with his friend Frank and brother-in-law Gary. Above all, Charlie cherished times spent with his family. He was never too busy to play catch or give batting lessons to his daughters and enjoyed playing soccer with his grandchildren. He loved family beach trips to the Jersey Shore, cherishing many wonderful times in Ocean City and North Wildwood. Charlie also enjoyed going to Gandy’s Beach and taking walks at Turkey Point. Charlie’s relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM and funeral service from 11:30 AM to 12:00 NOON on Monday, May 2, 2022, at the Newport United Methodist Church located at 340 Methodist Road in Newport, New Jersey.
